Beyond the Ballet Barre
Beyond the Ballet Barre (BTBB) (formerly The Collective), founded by Lauri Fitz-Pegado and Sandra Fortune-Green in 2019, comprises a select group of District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) ballet instructors and managers of dance institutions of color dedicated to ballet training, growth and development of children of color (COC).
“Beyond the Ballet Barre (BTBB) was founded on the principle that effective change is critical for the entrenched ballet paradigm to have a sustainable future. Enlightened leadership and commitment at all levels to inclusion of people of color and creating an environment of belonging is essential. To ensure the future of the genre, everyone must develop and employ cultural competence, recognize and learn from the stories of those who have survived and lived exclusion, and embraced creativity and innovation.”
Lauri Fitz-Pegado
Co-Founder of BTBB
